| Bio: | The title of my journal comes from Anne Sexton's "The Lost Ingredient" and the subtitle is from "In Memory of W.B. Yeats" by W.H. Auden. I'm a grad student working toward an MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Idaho. My emphasis is on writing poetry and my thesis will be a poetry collection, but I have also taken workshops in nonfiction, fiction, and playwriting. I hope I will never be interested in focusing on one sort of writing and reading to the exclusion of others! I might post a longer autobiographical blurb later. In the meantime, quotes: "no matter how many times i say that i don't define myself by my sexuality, my color, the car i drive or the clothes i wear, people can't resist wanting to put me in a compartment that serves to justify their own doctrine. i think these people are subconsciously afraid to acknowledge my multiplicity because it would force them to examine their own, which is usually hidden underneath their religion, politics or bling. before you can begin to understand someone, you must first love them, which is too daunting an idea for most."--RuPaul Charles, from the blog post "WHAT DOGS CAN HEAR" which you can read here "...I know that ritual is necessary. And for whatever people need, of course they should do it. But I do not believe in any denomination. Wherever I am, if I need the solitude, and I often do, and the meditation and the quietness and the communication with God, I'll go to any church, if I can find that atmosphere. But I will not get hung by it, nor will I get involved with it to the point where it dominates my thinking and this one is better than that one. No, I will not do that. Music is my God."--Nina Simone, from this DVD "Discontented with everyone and discontented with myself, I would glady redeem myself and elate myself a little in the silence and solitude of night. Souls of those I have loved, souls of those I have sung, strengthen me, support me, rid me of lies and the corrupting vapours of the world; and you, O Lord God, grant me the grace to produce a few good verses, which shall prove to myself that I am not the lowest of men, that I am not inferior to those whom I despise."--Charles Baudelaire (tr. Michael Hamburger), from this book "When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the areas of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses, for art establishes the basic human truths which must serve as the touchstones of our judgment. The artist, however faithful to his personal vision of reality, becomes the last champion of the individual mind and sensibility against an intrusive society and an officious state."--JFK the whole speech | |
